Packaging giants in proposed UK merger

More interesting news in the packaging world.

Following the announced merger of 2 packaging giants Smurfit Kappa and Westrock – global behemoths in their own right, the global packaging market has another potential merger lined up. Mondi have proposed creating a takeover of rival DS Smith, causing share prices to jump sharply.

Although details are thin on the ground, it would create another huge conglomerate in the corrugated packaging market.

Andy Tranter, Sales & Marketing Director at Affinity Packaging comments: “The packaging market is constantly changing – especially so over the last few years. Affinity Packaging is in a unique position in the UK in that we have the mix of equipment (both large and small format) so that we can be competitive across our customers full carton portfolio. Even with these mergers and take overs creating super groups, we have the advantage in our flexibility and agility to work closely with our customers and support them when needed”.

The merger of the 2 packaging companies would create a company with a valuation of around £10.4 billion.

Andy adds: “There will always be a place for large players in the market – they are well suited to supply to other large companies who operate at that scale. Affinity Packaging occupies a sweet spot in the UK market, and add real value to our customers who rely on our expertise in the carton packaging, but benefit from our mix of equipment at our sites”.
